Future home of Fairmount Park Community Orchard thanks to a TreeMobile/OrchardPeople.com Edible Garden Grant.

At Orchard People and TreeMobile, we are really excited to present the winners of the first TreeMobile/Orchard People Edible Garden Grant! Here are this year’s winners accompanied by comments from our judges. Congratuations! And if your group didn’t receive a grant this year, be sure to apply in 2016.

Guelph Winners:

Two Rivers – Edible Forest Grant (Includes edible plants and trees from TreeMobile and online fruit tree care training and consulting from OrchardPeople.com valued at $800)
We were pleased that Two Rivers is well- connected, even to one of the community kitchen. They are a well-established garden group and have a good plan for scheduling and maintenance. They exhibit all the signs of a cohesive community that will support a successful orchard project.

Priory Park – Edible Orchard Grant (Includes edible plants and trees from TreeMobile and online fruit tree care training and consulting from OrchardPeople.com valued at $450)
Priory Park has a long tradition of community gardening, and we were encouraged that there has been some recent renewal of momentum. Their garden /orchard has a high profile because of its location near the Parkway. We were impressed by the excellent organization that has been given for the assignment of tasks.

Toronto Winners:

Fairmount Park Farmer’s Market – Edible Forest Grant (Includes edible plants and trees from TreeMobile and online fruit tree care training and consulting from OrchardPeople.com valued at $800)
This applicant shows good use of a variety of knowledge resources in their community. They are unique in working within a market context. They have the support of a local city councillor and we would encourage them to draw on her as they will need some permission for some of their plan. This group will be a unifying point for some diverse groups and is well connected to food pantries.

St. John Paul II CSS – Edible Orchard Grant (Includes edible plants and trees from TreeMobile and online fruit tree care training and consulting from OrchardPeople.com valued at $450)
This school has an impressive aim to be the top eco-school in their school board. With components like an apiary, they have demonstrated a high consciousness for building an eco-system.  They have innovative watering systems using tree bags and drip pails. We would encourage them to find ways that they could engage the community in order to share their treasure.  They should consider spring or fall bearing plants to be sure that students can enjoy the harvest during the school year.

Big on Green – Edible Garden Grant (Includes edible plants and trees from TreeMobile and online training and consulting from OrchardPeople.com valued at $150)
We appreciated their intention for making a regional impact. They showed an informed concern for eco-system health, e.g. a well-developed approach to pollinators. They have a vision for adding more dimensions as time goes on. They are involving a noticeable diversity of community members and have the potential to become a community food hub.
